Application Examples of All-Solid-State Batteries AS-LiB®Contents
General Applications of All-Solid-State BatteriesThis section describes the commonly envisioned applications of all-solid-state batteries. ▼Possible Uses
Drone marketAll-solid-state batteries are attracting attention because of their high energy density and expected long life due to fewer side reactions, which will enable drones to fly for longer periods of time. They are also expected to provide safety in the event of drone crashes. Wearable device marketIn addition to contributing to the miniaturization of wearable devices, this technology is attracting attention for its ability to extend the battery life of devices. In addition, wearable devices are in contact with the human body, so it is essential that they are safe. Military and defense marketsIn consideration of portability and portability as a power source to be used during encampments, all-solid-state batteries are expected to be safe with high energy density. Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) MarketIn addition to the high charge storage characteristics and reliability of all-solid-state batteries to provide backup in case of emergency, they are also attracting attention from the standpoint of their long service life. Portable Electronics MarketThe application of all-solid-state batteries in electronic devices such as smartphones, notebook PCs, and tablets has attracted attention for their potential to make electronic devices thinner and lighter. They are also attracting attention from the perspectives of high safety and long life. Aerospace MarketIn aerospace applications, where reliability in extreme environments is required, all-solid-state batteries are attracting attention for their potential to provide high safety and stability. In particular, since they do not use liquid electrolyte and do not expand, they are attracting attention in the aerospace industry, where the space environment is a vacuum and temperatures in the operating environment vary widely. Medical Equipment MarketAll-solid-state batteries are also attracting attention in fields such as pacemakers and portable medical devices. They are expected to be safer and smaller, and may allow for greater flexibility in device design. All-Solid-State Batteries AS-LiB® Applications in Special EnvironmentsHere we introduce Kanadevia's all-solid-state AS-LiB® batteries. The all-solid-state AS-LiB® battery has features that allow it to be used safely in high-temperature, low-temperature, and vacuum environments. As a result, we are developing applications in industrial machinery such as semiconductor manufacturing equipment, aerospace equipment, and medical equipment. Use in aerospace equipment (high temperature)Conventional lithium-ion batteries used in space are difficult to use in the harsh space environment of a vacuum and extreme temperature differences due to their use of liquid and narrow operating temperature range, so they are installed inside equipment such as satellites and used while controlling the temperature. Especially in lunar exploration, lunar exploration is exposed for long periods of time to harsh environments of up to 120°C in sunlight and -170°C in shade, so rechargeable batteries that can operate at high and low temperatures are expected (Hitoshi Naito et al., Ceramics, 54, 316-320, 2019). Since the all-solid-state battery AS-LiB® can operate over a wide temperature range of -40°C to 120°C, the use of AS-LiB® can eliminate or simplify the need for temperature and thermal management, thus contributing to smaller and lighter equipment and lower power consumption for use in space environments. Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturer Adopts AS-LiB®.We have received an order for one lot (12 units) of our all solid-state lithium-ion battery “AS-LiB® ” (140mAh type) from a semiconductor manufacturing equipment manufacturer. We expect to receive continuous orders from the company in the future. Although we have received sample orders for AS-LiB® from various industries, this is the first order for AS-LiB® on a commercial basis to be incorporated into an actual product (device). Semiconductor manufacturing equipment (high/low temperature, vacuum)WAFER LOGGER (under development), a wafer-type temperature measurement device for semiconductor manufacturing equipment, is capable of measuring and recording temperatures without cables by mounting circuits directly on silicon wafers. The application of AS-LiB® enables operation and measurement in more extreme environments (high temperature, low temperature, vacuum). Reference: “WAFER LOGGER (under development)” by YashimaSokki There is a possibility that AS-LiB® can be applied to inspection applications for factory equipment and infrastructure facilities that are subject to high temperatures. Medical equipment (high temperature)Some surgical instruments and medical equipment, such as electrocautery scalpels, need to be sterilized at temperatures ranging from 115°C to 135°C. AS-LiB® can be used in such sterilization processes due to its wide temperature range. By applying AS-LiB® to surgical instruments and medical devices that need to be sterilized, the sterilization process can be passed through each of these devices and instruments, allowing for wireless operation and greater flexibility in the design of devices and instruments. Toward application to space equipmentAS-LiB® has a battery configuration that minimizes volatile components and does not expand significantly even in a vacuum environment. In 2022, an all-solid-state battery on-orbit demonstrator (Space AS-LiB) equipped with AS-LiB® was launched to the International Space Station (ISS), and subsequently, for the first time in the world, it was confirmed that all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries can charge and discharge in the space exposure environment (1.0 x 10-5 Pa), The Space AS-LiB has also achieved long-term charge-discharge cycle operation for more than one year. The Space AS-LiB will return to earth from space in December 2023, and is currently undergoing disassembly analysis and investigation at our Chikko Plant.
